Learning About Growing Plants Indoors

Growing plants indoors is not extremely difficult, but it you haven’t done it before there certainly are some things that you will need to know. The most important thing to understand is that every plant is different and has different needs. This is much like the different needs of various animals. Once you understand these different needs it can make the process easy even for a beginner.

One of the most important factors in successfully maintaining house plants is to provide them with the right amount of lighting each day. Many plants will come with information as to what kind of plant that they are and the amount of sun that they need each day to survive. For example, a plant that has a tag stating that they need full sun needs from 6 to 14 hours of sun each day. These are the most difficult plants to maintain in a home, especially those that are on the higher end when it comes to the number of hours needed. If you are in a home that has most or all of the windows facing east and west it may require that you have the ability to move the plant around the home. However, if you have windows on the south side of the home, then you may be able to find a spot that gets enough light each day to meet its needs.

Plants that are labeled as part shade are able to survive with just 4 to 6 hours of sunlight each day. These are much easier to keep alive and do not require that the plant be moved or that you have windows facing a certain direction in the home. All that matters is that they get at least 4 hours of sunlight on an average day. Low light plants can survive with very little sun, but can struggle if they get too much. It is good to find a place in the home that gets a little bit of sunlight each day in order to meet its needs.

The other most important factor in growing plants indoors is that they receive the right amount of water. Low water plants are typically known to be drought tolerant. This means that they can go an extended amount of time without having to be watered. The most common are known as mid-level water requirements. This means that they do not need to be watered daily, but require attention at least every few days. High level water requirement plants need to be watered a great deal. This may even be daily, depending on the specific plant.

If you are ever unsure of exactly what you plant needs there is a great deal of information available online. You can simply research the particular plant to learn about what experts have to say about their particular needs. The more time you invest into learning about each plant that you have the more likely it is that they will thrive and grow, which clearly is the ultimate goal.
